Bowen Technique can help all sorts of problems

PEOPLE often ask if Bowen technique is a type of massage.

Pom and Penny say, like massage it is hands-on, but the hands also come off (so to speak).

It involves mostly small, gentle rolling moves over selected areas of the body - often muscles or tendons - using fingers or thumbs or occasionally a flat hand or even elbow. It can be done over a layer of thin clothing. The number of moves and the position of the moves on the clients body, are tailored completely to the individual client’s needs and therefore depend on a very careful consultation and assessment by the therapist before the treatment.

One person with a knee problem might need very different moves from another with the same symptoms.

The other thing that is specific to Bowen treatment is the rest periods between every few moves. The client just stays on the couch, chilling out while the therapist moves away or quietly leaves the room for a couple of minutes or so.

Many people think that such minimalistic stuff would have no effect whatsoever and Bowen technique definitely doesn’t claim to cure anything, but people often find it immensely helpful for all sorts of problems – musculoskeletal issues, chronic pain, stress, digestion, stiffness, insomnia, even allergies.

Bowen is very much about the whole body being enabled to re- balance itself, and takes the common sense view that if one part of the body is out of kilter, other parts of the body (and brain) will adjust to this. Clients often find the treatment deeply relaxing.

Everyone’s response is unique to them, and that is one reason why practitioners find it so interesting; it feels like a continual learning curve.

Treatments are available in Crediton, Lapford and Tiverton.
