THERE are more than 900 Air Training Corps squadrons spread all over the UK; now there is to be one at Crediton.

At Saturday's Farmers' Market, staff and cadets from 2469 Exeter St Thomas Squadron, from Exeter, had parked their information vehicle and disappeared around the town, spreading the word about a Crediton unit being formed.

For boys and girls aged up to 20 years, being a member of the ATC can mean flying experience, adventure training activities, camping abroad and in this country, working towards Duke of Edinburgh Awards or qualifying for BTec certificates.

They could fly with RAF pilots, do target shooting, rock climbing, football, learn radio communications. A chance to take part in activities most young people would not have a chance to try.

It can be a fun way to make new friends, learn unusual skills, and it is great value for money. The uniform is on free loan from the RAF while a person is a cadet.

It is not a recruiting organisation but could give a head start whatever career path a cadet chooses.

To know more either look at http://www.aircadets.org">www.aircadets.org or http://www.2469.co.nr">www.2469.co.nr with the first session in Crediton planned for January 28 at QE Lower School.

There are also places for adult helpers, no formal qualifications are needed and it is something that will bring a huge interest.

People were also able to meet Sgt Scott Stripp who will be in charge of 2469 Detached Flight, Crediton. He has been part of the ATC for 14 years, from when he was a Cadet.

Flt Lt Chris Myers, in charge of the squadron, was an ATC cadet in London, joined the RAF, worked in various places around the world. He is now retired.
