PLUMES of thick black smoke coming from a fire involving a tractor and bailer in a field at Sweetham, near Newton St Cyres could be seen for many miles, as far as Crediton and beyond this evening, Thursday, July 9.

Fire crews from Crediton and Exeter rushed to the scene at about 6.30pm to find that a tractor involved in fire, causing a loud explosion which could be heard by many local residents.

Smaller explosions occurred, it is believed as tyres ignited.

The tractor driver was unhurt and many other members of the contractor and farming community quickly came to his aid.

Fire crews were quickly on the scene and put out the fire which had also spread to a part of the field and neighbouring hedgerow.

Firefighters used hose reels to put out the fires, a tanker of water also attending.

Sets of breathing apparatus were worn by some of the firefighters fighting the fire.

A farm tanker of water was also brought to the scene, farmers raking up straw from the fields to move it away from the flames.

A spokesperson at the scene said that the Case 340 tractor was recently purchased new and was fortunately insured.
