CORRESPONDENTS to your newspaper and other residents of the town are understandably interested in only one thing with regard to the Link Road and that is building it as quickly as possible in the best possible place.

They are not interested in the party politics. Although a Liberal Democrat, if I am absolutely non-partisan on the issue, the truth is that all administrations, Conservative, Lib Dem and Con/Lib Dem coalitions, have totally failed to get a road built for Crediton the last 50 years.

The reasons for that have been almost always been Central Government criteria about the priorities and rules about funding.

It is most unfortunate that the County Council (then Lib Dem controlled) just over a year ago decided that objections by hauliers meant that an investigation into a less steep alternative route was necessary.

Thankfully, Nick Way's intervention then ensured that there should be further public consultation on that route before a decision was made.

That consultation and investigating Ralph Page's other option has taken barely 12 months.

It is the present Conservative administration that is now proposing to put the Link Road back three years in the funding programme.

This is indefensible and we all need to campaign hard to persuade the County Council to decide the route and fund it without that delay.

Surely now, at last, Crediton's need must be the top priority?
