CREDITON Library was pleased to hold a successful and well attended, free author event for children via Zoom for World Book Day.

Multi-award-winning and internationally acclaimed children’s author Zana Fraillon, who lives in Australia, agreed to stay up a bit later on Thursday, March 4 (morning for us, but late evening for her) and chat about her children’s books and the writing process.

The children learned about the thinking behind her 11 books, especially "The Bone Sparrow", "Wisp: A Story of Hope" and "The Lost Soul Atlas", which many of them had read or were currently studying in school.

Nearly 90 accounts logged into the Zoom room, three of whom were schools streaming the event to their pupils in school and at home.

The children learned all about Zana’s writing space, and then participated in an activity to help them start to write a story, learning how ideas could form and flow to create a "guardian" and then a "journey", which everyone loved.

Finally, Zana had endless interesting questions from the children, who had the opportunity to speak with her and ask their questions directly.

Zana wished the approximately 125 children who attended this event a "Happy World Book Day" and said she had "loved every minute" of her online session.

After the event, Crediton Library was contacted by parents and teachers who said that their children had been inspired to go off and write after the session had finished.

Everyone agreed that this was a fantastic way to celebrate World Book Day under lockdown.

Crediton Library is managed by Libraries Unlimited, the charity responsible for running Devon and Torbay Libraries. This World Book Day event is just one of the activities in the wide Libraries Unlimited cultural offering.
