AS it comes towards the end of the bowling season many finals are being played, the first of which took place on Bank Holiday Sunday.

The Mixed Pairs was contested by 12 couples some of whom were husband and wife and others were just individuals paired together.

Each pair played seven ends against three other pairs and the winners were decided by the number of victories and the shot difference.

Only two pairs went through the afternoon undefeated, but the runners up with a shot difference of plus eight were Pam Swan and Terry Chamberlain.

The victorious pair of Liz Smerdon and Mike Canning received the cup from Competition Organiser, Mark Theedom. They won by the closest of margins having a shot difference of plus nine.

Mark will be busy this weekend as on Saturday, September 2 as it is Men’s Championship Finals Day and this will be followed on the Sunday by the Ladies Championship Finals Day, being organised by Jenny Newbery.

In the traditional Men v Ladies match played on Bank Holiday Monday there were 14-a-side and so two rinks of fours were played and two rinks of triples.

In fairness to the Ladies they won both rinks of fours but lost both rinks of triples.

Maybe a draw could be called, but it is shots that count and therefore the Men proved victorious by 74 shots to 60 and the Ladies Vice Captain, Sue Grigg, received the Wooden Spoon on behalf of the team.

On both days members brought a plate of food to enjoy a shared tea together.

The rest of the week was success after success.

In the friendly fixtures there has been an 88-51 victory over Bradninch followed up by a close 76-72 win over Uffculme and a 110-75 win over Chudleigh.

I haven’t been able to report 8-0 victories for all three Men’s Over 60’s sides until this week.

The A team defeated Pinces A, the B team did the same to Pinces B and the C team defeated Ottery St Mary.

It really is very tight in Division One with the A team having two fixtures left. The B and C teams play their final fixtures this week and are more than likely to finish third in their respective leagues.
