FIFTEEN-years-old Harry May won the top prize at Kirton Youth Squash Club's summer tournament last month after a thrilling, closely fought final against 14-years-old Tom Kershaw. "It was a very close match and some excellent squash was played," said club coach Angie Andrews. A total of 18 young squash players from the Crediton area competed in the tournament, which took place at Lords Meadow Leisure Centre. Despite narrowly losing the final 2-1, Tom was awarded a special trophy for being the Most Improved Player of the Year. The Coach's Award went to Ashleigh Steer, for her dedication and positive attitude, despite being the only girl in the more advanced group. Nine-years-old Rufus Hetherington was awarded a prize for being the Most Enthusiastic Player. "He is the youngest player in the club but the most enthusiastic I've ever seen," said Angie. One of the newest members of the club, Wib Mulligan, was voted the Players' Player. In the competition for the less experienced players 14-years-old Daniel Richards emerged as champion to take the Reed Construction Cup. Gifts were given to coaching assistants Toby Tompkins and Nicola Eatough, to thank them for helping with the tournament and throughout the year. Nicola joined the club eight years ago at the age of 13 and after mastering the game, went on to qualify as a Level 2 Squash and Racketball coach. "We are particularly grateful to Nicola for her help with marking this tournament and for her help with coaching in recent years," said Angie, adding that Nicola was leaving Crediton to join the RAF. "We are going to miss her," Angie added. Kirton Youth Squash Club, which celebrates its sixth anniversary this year, holds two coaching sessions every Saturday at Lords Meadow Leisure Centre for beginners and more advanced players.
