The A Grade tournament, hosted by Kirton Youth Squash Club at Lords Meadow Leisure Centre, was won by Darcy Boyle from Newton Abbot who beat Kirton Youth’s Toby Tompkins 2-1.
“The standard of play was really high,” said 18-years-old Toby, who, as well as competing in the tournament, had organised the event involving 11 players, aged 10 to 18.
“I think the tournament was a great success and really showcased how successful our club is,” said Toby, who helps run the club’s weekly Saturday morning coaching sessions.
The play-off for third and fourth place was between Ruby Jarman from the Devon and Exeter Squash Club and Austin Bryant from Newton Abbot. In another tense match, Ruby came out on top, winning 2-1.
Losers in the first round of the tournament competed for a Plate, which was played between Tom Kershaw of Kirton Youth and Will Cockram from the Devon and Exeter.
Tom put on a good performance and took the first game. However, Will came back well to take the second game, to set up a tense decider. Will eventually came out on top in what was a competitive final.
Trophies were presented by Phil Morgan from Helmores estate agents of Crediton, who had sponsored the tournament.
“We are extremely grateful to Helmores for supporting our tournament,” added Toby. “I would also like to thank our coach, Angie Andrews, for helping me organise this event and for our committee of parents who provided refreshments and helped with the scoring.”
Last November Kirton Youth hosted B and C Grade tournaments, for intermediate and beginner players from across the county.
