A SERIES of events have been organised during 2014 to celebrate the centenary of Newton St Cyres Football Club.

The existing committee and players have plans for a veteran's game, open to all past players (preceded by a present youth sides versus parent's match), a summer barbecue, a golf day, a charity football match, race nights, quiz nights and culminating in a celebratory dinner and dance.

The committee are hoping to contact as many ex-players and officials as possible for photographs, stories and anecdotes for inclusion in a Centenary Yearbook.

Newton St Cyres Football Club was founded in 1914. The first record of football taking place in Newton St Cyres was prior to the First World War in the form of inter-village matches associated with the local school.

By the end of the war, in 1919 the club had moved from its Tytheing Close base to Broad Marsh.

It temporarily disbanded during the Second World War but reformed and in the late 1940's it moved to a new location known as "Marles".

In the early 1960's the club moved again to Sand Down Lane - opposite where it first began.

In 1971 after three long years of consultation and the sterling work of Henry Gliddon (parish councillor and clerk), the Church Commissioners finally agreed to lease the parish the present Recreation Ground which has been home to Newton St Cyres Football Club ever since.

Henry Gliddon was later awarded an MBE for his services to the community.

The early 1970's provided Newton St Cyres with their first piece of silverware in the form of the Intermediate One Championship (West) in season 1972/73.

The following year the team won the Intermediate League Cup Final in 1973/74 which was followed with the Senior 1a League Championship of 1974/75.

One of the club's other most successful periods came during the late 80's and early 90's.

During this time the club won the Wheaton Cup in 1985/86. During the 1988/89 season the club won the Premier Division. It then also went on to lift the Premier Division Cup in the 1990/91 season.

By 1992/93 Newton St Cyres had expanded significantly and ran four teams, the first team in the Devon County League.

This coincided with Newton St Cyres Senior team becoming founder members of the Devon County League finishing in a commendable fifth place out of 16.

Newton St Cyres currently runs two senior teams and three youth teams as well as an annual youth five-a-side tournament for more than 100 teams from Somerset, Devon and Cornwall.
