A CREDITON woman has raised more than £900 for charity by running a half marathon.
Margaret Hawman finished the Great North Run, which began in Newcastle and ended in South Shields, in two hours, 29 minutes and 53 seconds on Sunday, September 7.
“I’m really pleased with my time,” she said.
“The atmosphere was electric, the other runners and supporters made it an amazing day.
“I have raised over £900 for Alzheimer’s Society with some money still coming in.
“Thank you to my husband who hates crowds and videoed the Red Arrows for me and supported me all the way, and to all my family and friends who have been there every step of the way with the training and on the day!
“A special thank-you to Crediton Dairy, Whitland Engineering, Morrisons of Crediton and their customers and Gilbert Stephens Solicitors.
“To run for such an amazing charity that helps and supports people with dementia and their families is a great privilege.
“Dementia has been part of my family for several years as many who know me know.”
Alzheimer’s Society is a charity that helps people with dementia. It also funds dementia research.
As many as 60,000 runners took part in the Great North Run this year. The event has made national headlines in recent days as its 2025 finisher medals show a map of Sunderland instead of Newcastle.
“As the eagle-eyed have already spotted, the shape of the river on this year’s finisher t-shirt and medal is indeed the River Wear,” a spokesperson said.
“To answer the rumours that this was the route reveal for next year… sorry to disappoint, it’s a mistake. Lots of people looked very closely at the designs and none of us picked it up.”
In 2023, Ms Hawman ran the virtual London Marathon, raising more than £1,200 for FORCE Cancer Charity.
