NORTH TAWTON 20 - OKEHAMPTON SECONDS 7
AFTER a well presented lunch for past players and sponsors alike the diners and a good crowd of approximately 125 were treated to a good game of rugby served up by both teams on the back pitch due to the main pitch holding too much water to be safe.
North Tawton fielded a full strength side with just a couple of faces missing.
The players soon took the game to the Okey seconds, the Tawts keeping the ball in-hand and making some really good metres towards the Okey try line.
A well worked try by Matty Dennis was added to with the conversion by Alex Dennis to give the home team a 7-nil lead.
Okehampton had not come to make the numbers up and soon hit back with a try of their own with the kick score 7-7.
From there on, in all the go-forward rugby, it was fair to say it came from North Tawton, a second try from Matty Dennis with the kick this time by Craig Dennis restored the lead to seven points with a penalty added taking the Tawts into half-time, the Tawts 17 and looking comfortable, with Okehampton 7.
The second half gave us more of the same. Try as they might Okey could not get any real time on the ball and another penalty by Alex Dennis took the game further away from the visitors at 20-7.
The Tawts were looking every inch the Division Two Champions, the final score remaining at 20-7.
While only three points were scored in the second half it was no less entertaining than the first with some good natured banter between the past and present in the crowd.
It was nice to see quite a few Okey spectators travelling with the second team. Ryan Goss, Tawton’s No 10 was man of the match.
