DESPITE the miserable weather prior to last weekend’s matches, the games went ahead. The Under 13s had a three-way – with matches against Exmouth/Withycombe and then Cullompton.

The first game against Exmouth/Withycombe ended with a 25-0 win to Crediton, who fought hard to defend and tackle well in order to not concede a try.

The second game against Cullompton saw the girls get their second victory of the day winning 15-0. The girls were forced to defend much more in this game, but the scoreline shows how accurate they were with the tackles and turning over possession in both contact and scrums.

The girls worked extremely well as a team, which really paid off and was indicated in the results. Well done to each and every player, and especially those who volunteered to help Cullompton out playing a third match.

Play of the day – Scarlett Wonnacott’s breakaway run for the length of the pitch – only to be caught short of the try line. Great Effort.

Try scorers: Tilly Pulfer, Georgia Scott McDowell and Jess Denham Hill.

UNDER 15’s

A last minute score left Crediton Under 15 Girls disappointed as they suffered a narrow four-point defeat to Exmouth when the home side struck with a well-worked try to snatch victory back from the visitors, who had put themselves in front just minutes before.

In what was a very good game for the neutral, the scoring throughout the match swung first one way and then the other with the two teams trading tries; Exmouth opening the scoring before Crediton hit back almost immediately.

Despite the wide expansive pitch, neither team had the chance to open up as possession swapped between them and the majority of the first half - indeed much of the match - was played in the middle third of the pitch and with Exmouth adding a second try, the first half finished 10-5.

Much of the quality play, from both sides, came in a tense second half and Crediton had their best period when they resisted an Exmouth attack, regaining control of the ball less than three metres from their own line before moving up the pitch through a combination of passing moves and recovering the ball back from kicks, before a final passing move saw a try to put the girls just two points behind with seven minutes left.

The Black and Gold’s thought they’d done enough when they crossed the Exmouth line again with another good move to snatch the lead – for the first time in the match – and only three minutes left.

Unfortunately, Exmouth had one last move in them and with a mixture of determination, desire and teamwork forced themselves over the line to grab the spoils, with no time left for Creddy to go again.

Coach Andrew Drayton reflected on the defeat, commenting: “There were three very good tries in the match and we scored two of them but it’s disappointing that it wasn’t enough to get us the victory that we wanted.

“We have one last game before a bit of a break so I’m sure the girls will want to work hard to get back to winning ways and then enjoy some time off.”
