AN exciting new development for Crediton took place at Crediton Rugby Club on Saturday, February 19.

More than 60 children, in three age groups from 18 months up to six years, took part in a taster session to mark the launch of didi Devon Rugby.

Paul Tearle and Gemma Carnegie are the directors of the franchise locally and Paul explained that Crediton was a “natural choice” for the launch, “having an established and thriving rugby club”.

The franchise was established in 2015 and its chief executive, Vicky Macqueen BEM, former England player, who is also a qualified coach, was at Crediton Rugby Club to help run the taster sessions with the club’s coaches.

Paul explained: “The idea behind didi rugby is to get kids moving and give them confidence.

“It is linked to the Early Years framework and is part of a programme of healthy development for kids.

“Today is the launch of our franchise in Devon and we will also be operating at Chulmleigh and the Waie Inn at Zeal Monachorum.

“We have seen some real talent here today, especially skills such as throwing and kicking.

“It is great to have the support of Crediton Rugby Club and Creddy Club and the club has been wonderful at hosting us.

“I cannot thank the coaches enough, our mascots Dougie and Daisy and local rugby heroes including Wayne Reed.

“Crediton Rugby Club can now boast that it is offering rugby to the community for those aged from 18 months to 80 years of age.”

Liz Goodman, Crediton RFC chairman, said that the club was thrilled to host the launch and looked forward to a long association with didi Devon Rugby.
