CREDITON THIRDS 14 - EXMOUTH THIRDS 12

CREDITON came out on top in a cracking game that extolled the virtues of lower level rugby.

This was a battle between two genuine Third Fifteen’s although the standard of rugby provided by both sets of players would certainly never have given any indication that this was Devon Merit Table Two.

The honesty of both sides was evident as neither team was bolstered by players who regularly play at a higher level.

The Cockles took a very early lead with a well-taken try and conversion before any of the spectators had time to settle.

That said, Crediton responded with a cheeky try from scrum-half Pete Rich who sneaked over in the corner.

Despite the efforts of both sides, neither team could add to the score before the interval. Exmouth looked lively outside although the hosts were getting the better of things in the scrum.

Two second half penalties from fly-half Gareth Kinch saw the home side lead 11-7 but the visitors bounced back with a well-taken try from their outside centre for a single point lead.

With the clock ticking down, Crediton won a scrum on the Cockles “22” and after several phases Kinch was well-placed for a drop goal attempt which sailed through the posts, bringing back memories of a certain Jonny Wilkinson from 2003 and which turned out to be the winning score.

Exmouth did have a chance in the final minute with a penalty but the effort was wide.

Performances such as this from both sides proves that lower level rugby can thrive, the opportunities are there and the players are around, they just need to be encouraged.
