CULLOMPTON THIRDS 6
WITH no First team fixture last week North Tawton took the chance to give their Second team a run out against a Cullompton Third team.
While the scoreboard might tell its own story, this was a lively encounter that maybe doesn’t reflect the effort made by Cullompton. They played a lot better than their five points suggest.
In the blink of an eye the A team were two tries up and looking very much in control. Cully did take advantage of Tawton’s lack of concentration to score what was to prove to be their only points of the match and for a minute or two it looked like they might be able to improve on the five points, but a good spell of play from the North Tawton team with a few tries for good measure put the game beyond Cullompton by half-time.
The second half got underway with more of the same from Tawton but it has to be said Cullompton never gave up on the match and were a credit to the shirts.
North Tawton welcomed back one or two faces. It was nice to see Cam Rickaby back in the fold to surely make the First team on most people’s team sheets.
Dave Fewings also scored tries for fun but more importantly it was nice to see some new faces having a go. It will keep the first team players on their toes which has got to be good for the club in general.
All in all a good exercise to give the “selectors” some thinking to do as the season unfolds, as Mr Grace would say “you’ve all done very well”.
Normal service resumes tomorrow, Saturday, October 1, with the return visit to South Molton which will no doubt be another hard-fought encounter. Well worth a trip down to the bright lights of Molton if you can get there!
