HORNETS 55 - CREDITON 3
CLEARLY the obvious statement is that we were well and truly stung by Hornets on Saturday, November 9 and, although the game was not as entirely one-sided as the scoreline suggests, there were very few occasions during the game where we looked like scoring.
Playing on a 4G pitch is an experience that we don’t get very often whereas our hosts on the day play and train on it on a weekly basis.
It does give the home side a huge advantage and it is impossible to imagine that they would lose very often at home. The pitch itself generates pace and if you add to that a team that were quick in thought of mind and deed then you have a set up that will certainly be successful at home.
Surprisingly we were ahead on three minutes with an Ollie Avery-Wright penalty but that really is as good as it got.
Hornets levelled almost immediately and from there on in it was us on the defensive for much of the game.
The home side ran from everywhere and although we defended well at times, eventually, the pressure told and the tries began to flow.
We did have our moments and certainly put pressure on their line for a period of time but their defence held firm.
In one instance from a penalty advantage, we chipped through only for Hornets to take the ball over their line and touch down.
Assuming a penalty or at worst a five-metre scrum, the match official surprisingly gave them a ‘22’ drop out. When things are not going your way those sorts of decisions simply make matters worse.
As the Hornets own report stated, we were unlucky to come up against a side who put in their best performance for three years…oh! Well we can move on and bounce back against Keynsham tomorrow!
CREDITON 2NDS 21 - PAIGNTON 2NDS 10
An entertaining if somewhat fractious game at times, we were more comfortable winners than the score suggests.
Paignton simply could not cope with our forward power as they went backwards and at a rate of knots at almost every scrum.
Prop Wayne Reed grabbed his 100th senior try for the Club, a remarkable feat for a prop and his run in from two yards was nothing short of spectacular.
OKEHAMPTON 3RDS 29 - CREDITON 3RDS 21
The two evenly matched sides produced an entertaining game at Okehampton and had it not been for conceding a couple of soft tries, the Crediton side really could have won. Another long serving prop Kevin Ellis went in for his 119th senior try for the Club, just a little reminder to others that he can still reach the try-line!
Captain John Gurzynski and scrum-half (for the day!) Brad Baker also scored tries with Hayden Hill landing three conversions.
CREDITON COLTS 22 - PAIGNTON COLTS 0
Solid defending from the Colts denied the visitors any scoring opportunities in what was a relatively comfortable victory.
Liam Bayley crossed over for a couple of tries with one apiece for Tobias Whittaker and Joe Warren. Ryan Styles landed a conversion.
Tomorrow, Saturday, November 16, the First Fifteen entertain Keynsham whilst the Seconds travel to Teignmouth. The thirds are at home against Exeter Athletic Seconds and the Colts away at Torquay.
