CREDITON RFC VETERANS XV 29-10 OKEHAMPTON VETERANS
ON Saturday, January 3 we welcomed Okehampton Vets to Blagdon for a thrilling match on the main pitch.
It had been seven months since the old boys played last on what was a very dry and sun-baked hard pitch.
This match also threatened to be on a rock-hard pitch because of frost, but the sun shone and the match was played out in fine conditions.
As well as some seasoned veterans, a few new and returning players were warmly welcomed into the team, some of who had not played rugby for 20 years: Stuart Gibson, Robin Holloway, Ade Wilson and Tom Smale. They all played brilliantly and we hope they don’t let their boots gather dust again!
Having obviously enjoyed a very good Christmas break, the first battle for many was trying to get the shirts on in the changing room, with several calls being made for bigger shirts and shorts!
A minute’s silence was held before kick-off to commemorate Paul Harris, a club legend, who passed away recently.
The game started a bit sluggishly but with good physicality and it was clear we had not played for a while.
Jordan Pring scored three tries, Chris Hooper scored one and Pete Rich fell over before the line but his momentum carried him over. Ross Toms missed the first conversion in front of the posts, but redeemed himself with some great drop goal conversions from near the touch line.
Both sides were well matched and the scoreline of 29-10 was more than we expected. Okehampton knocking on at critical points cost them dearly.
It was a great effort from both teams and a hugely enjoyable start to 2026 – we look forward to the rematch next season.
The next Crediton Vets match is home against Tiverton on January 31.
