Hayle 3 - North Tawton 53
Tribute Cornwall/Devon League
NORTH Tawton travelled down to the Duchy to take on a Hayle team keen to improve their recent run of results that has them sitting at the bottom of the league table.
Thankfully the rain held off for the duration of the whole match even the sun came out to watch what in the end turned in to a bit of a route with North Tawton enjoying control of the match as the scoreline suggests.
It has to be said despite a score board ticking over quite fast at times in the visitors favour the home team never let their heads drop and played to the final whistle with passion, sometimes a bit too much passion, with the referee giving each side a yellow card for too much cuddling without the ball.
By and large though, the game was played in good spirit.
The stark truth is that Hayle had no answer for the North Tawton line speed. On the rare times that Hayle got the ball in-hand they were forced into a missed pass or a turn over giving the run of play back to the Tawts who tails up were enjoying the afternoon’s work.
Matty Dennis opened the scoring with the first of his two tries on five minutes, followed by Matt Baker on 22 minutes and Tom Chisholm adding two of his own before half-time.
With all the kicks missed, not easy conditions in the wind, we get to half-time the score 3-20.
Hayle scored what turned out to be their only points of the game with a penalty right in front of the posts.
First to add to the try tally in the second half was Tom McGrattan.
Strong carries, as ever, organised the attack as he broke the gain line time after time, supported by Ryan Goss playing another strong captain’s role getting the ball wide out to the wingers.
Some great offloads were made by Bill Sharpe, a welcome return to the side.
Luke Dennis not to be outdone goes over to add to his seasons tally it’s scoring for fun now. Tom McGrattan came off with a hamstring niggle for 15 minutes, only to return to the field.
Ryan Goss had to make way with his shoulder injury causing concern the game won no point risking the captain.
The rest seems to have done Tom good as he finishes the game in fine style adding two more tries giving him a hat-trick, kicking the conversations with the wind prove at lot easier in the second half.
Liam Pyle adds four good kicks to give us the final score of 3-53.
It was a good much needed confidence boosting win for North Tawton and while Hayle might not be the strongest test the Tawts have to face in Cornwall.
This season it does everyone good to get a big win. You can only play what’s in front of you and they did that. Next it is home to Liskeard.
