STAFF from the NHS complex care team in Crediton braved mud, ice-cold water and exhaustion as they took in the notorious Commando Challenge in East Devon.

The team, competing under the name "Crediton Community Angels", were put through their paces over the Royal Marines Commando Assault Course on Woodbury Common.

The eight staff members, who work for the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust, joined hundreds of people who took part from across the UK in facing obstacles such as the Sheep Dip, Crocodile Pit, Peter's Pool and underground tunnels.

The team finished 16th out of the 34 competing in the 4k fun challenge and raised £760 for the Devon Air Ambulance Trust and Royal Marine charities.

Michele Baxendale-Nichols, community nurse team manager, said: "It was a great team-building experience which has enhanced the working relationships within the complex care team in Crediton."

Nigel Biernacki, community matron, said: "The whole experience was invigorating and bonded us as a team."

Sally Wilson, complex care team co-ordinator, said: "I cannot wait to do it all over again next year."
