SATURDAY, May 6 saw Sandford First team travel to Topsham to play Exeter University Seconds in their last match of the season.
The “Ford” had lost the home fixture 1-9 so were hoping to do better this time around.
From the start Uni showed their skill with their passing and speed.
They had several chances and only poor finishing kept Sandford level.
“Ford” had a few openings but were mainly chasing the opposition or defending.
Lloyd Phelps, brought in as a late replacement, took charge of the defence. On 36 minutes Uni took the lead with a run down the right and a tap in from the cross, making the score 1-0.
Matt Parsell in the “Ford” goal was kept fairly busy with some brilliant saves. With time edging away towards the break the away side were hit with two more goals on the 41st and 43rd minutes.
The half-time score was 3-0 to Uni.
The second half saw Sandford still chasing the game but still couldn’t convert the few chances they made.
On 74 minutes a tiring Phelps was brought off to be replaced by the manager Ben Waller.
This made little difference to the score and Uni won 3-0.
On the whole Sandford were outplayed by the Uni side but the “Ford” never gave up trying and as the season has progressed the team has got better and better match by match.
Well done to all the players who have put on the “Ford” shirts this season, you’ve made us all proud. See you next season.
