NEWTON St Cyres Football Club hosted the Tony Pryce Mid Devon Soccer League's qualifying round of Under 11's Cup competition on March 9 at the Recreation Ground.

The sun was in fine form and shone brightly on the rising stars competing in the event which saw the top four team's progress into the quarter-final stage.

North Tawton Lions' and Tigers', St Martins, Cheriton Fitzpaine and Newton Knights' all fought it out and were cheered on by an army of excited supporters keen to see some football being played after only managing one match day event since early December as a result of the miserable weather.

The hosts had plenty to smile about with two wins and two draws ensuring they progress to the next round, having not conceded a goal in all four matches.

"It's been a difficult winter due to the poor weather," said Newton's Chairman, Graham Stone, "but it's been fantastic to welcome the teams to the Rec for a great morning of football.

"The games were well-contested and the support from the parents and spectators has been first-class," he added.

Newton, who joined the Mid Devon League this year, are also looking for new players to join up with the existing squad.
