THERE has been lots of activity at Newton St Cyres Tennis Club this month with one of the highlights being an exciting Annual Junior Tournament. All the juniors who took part played magnificently and produced some incredibly competitive matches.   Elliott Butterfield claimed the boys eight and under title, beating Euan Philip in an exciting head-to-head, which took place during a Wednesday coaching session.   The remainder of the finals were played on a very hot and sunny Saturday in June.   Joe Knox narrowly beat Joe Douglas to the boys 10 and under title in what was a hard-fought match played in excellent spirit.   Jack Gordon won all his matches to claim the boys 12 and under trophy. Michael Lambourne, Tobias Whittaker, Matthew Hill and Cameron Fahy all played extremely well and made it a great tournament. Tom Baber was the winner of the 16 and under open, with Reuben Taylor, Alice Dowle and Martyn Hill all playing exceptionally well and producing great tennis. The great sportsmanship demonstrated throughout the tournament was a credit to the juniors and to the club.   Thanks go to coach Toby Harradence for running the tournament and to Sharon Hawkins for helping with the umpiring. It was a beautiful summer evening for the ladies singles qualifying event and a scorcher of a day for the Open singles qualifier. All of the doubles qualifiers have also taken place and the finals for all of these events will be held on Sunday, July 27 from 12 noon onwards. It should be a great afternoon of tennis, with refreshments on offer, so do go along to the Recreation Ground to watch. The Club's league matches are progressing steadily, with good weather meaning very few postponements. They also had 12 pairs of tickets allocated to members through the Wimbledon club ballot and the lucky winners all enjoyed some great play on a variety of courts. The Club welcomes new members, so do check out the website: http://www.newtonstcyrestennisclub.co.uk">www.newtonstcyrestennisclub.co.uk , where there is news of all club sessions, upcoming tournaments and contact details for the membership secretary, Laura Leigh.
