AS the summer goes on, lack of rainfall is of course becoming a serious worry.
Arable and livestock farmers are most concerned, as indeed are keen gardeners.
From a golfers point of view golf courses are becoming ever dryer, the ground getting harder, and the rich greenness of the fairways turning to a very pale and dry thatch.

These difficult conditions make additional work for our Greenkeepers.
While the fairways become paler and drier, they have somehow managed to keep the greens in wonderful condition.
Each green looking like an oasis of emerald green, the ball running smoothly and truly on the carpet like surface.
It’s a frustrating time of year for the ground staff, but in the middle of these dry conditions there is one day they particularly enjoy.
The day rejoices under the splendid heading “The Greenkeepers Revenge!”

This Saturday a large field of players set off from a shotgun start to take on the challenges the Greenkeepers had set them.
Obstacles in front of greens, a defences in front of the holes, holes on slopes or precariously placed near the edge of the greens, air blowers and ramps, and casually strewn rakes.
Just some of the tricks our green staff got up to to make life difficult for the players, and provide a day of much fun and laughter.

The eventual winners were the team of Kirk Atherton, Mark Elliott, Richard Langham and Colin Stamp with a terrific score of 51.
The event also records the members appreciation of the terrific work our Greenkeepers do each year.
A few other results this week, the Seniors Captains Cup was won by Nigel Ashplant with 39 points.
The Midweek Stableford won by Alistair Todd and the Ladies Stableford by Shirley Stunell with an excellent 44 points, including three twos!
