DOWNES Crediton Golf Club Seniors played their May medal from the white tees on Monday, May 16 and winning, fresh from his victory in the Seniors Open was Graham Pateman, who finished on nett 70, one clear of his nearest challengers Peter Johnson and Stephen Pitt, both scoring nett 71’s.

Pateman also won Division One from Pitt with James Downing following on in third posting a nett 72.

Peter Johnson took the honours in Division Two by one shot from Graham Cox (nett 72) with David Cousins third scoring a nett 73.

On Wednesday, May 18, Mark Dafters continued his consistent recent form with a solid 38 points to take victory in the Mid Week Stableford. Jason Arnold and Patrick McVeigh both scored 37 points to finish second and third respectively.

On Thursday, May 19, a day with testing weather conditions, Downes ladies played their County Stableford Four and winning for the second time in recent weeks was Judith Ezard with a fine 34 points.

This also gave Judith victory in the Silver Division by one point from Lyn Parry (33 points).

Bronze One Division saw Ying Wong take top spot scoring 32 points beating June Mitchell by a single point (31). Di Parsons won Bronze Two posting 32 points.

On Saturday, May 21, all sections at Downes competed for the Rosemary Parker Memorial Trophy, an individual stableford.

A day that saw rain showers throughout, Matt Smith dealt best with the conditions to take victory. His 40 points also won him Division Three from Stephen Cross by a point (39) with Robbie Hallam third on 37.

Matt Arnold once again showed that he is the “in form” low handicap at Downes winning Division One with 38 points.

Alan Lawrence and Simon Cartlidge both scored 36 points to finish second and third. Paul Singleton won Division Two with 35 points one clear of Martyn Sargent.

Downes Crediton Dartmoor League team continued their fine start to the season compiling a 4-1 over rivals Okehampton on Sunday, May 22.

Recent weeks have seen Downes Crediton Professional Barry Austin enjoy two successful outings when putting together a brace of wins.

The first came in the Devon Professionals Matchplay Championship at Tiverton Golf Club. The top 16 from this years Devon PGA Order of Merit competed over two days.

After both winning their first three matches Austin came up against Kevin Harper (East Devon) in the final. Although Harper went into an early lead Austin slowly pegged him back to eventually wrap up his seventh Matchplay title on the 18th green.

Barry’s second victory came at the Devon County PGA Exeter Golf and Country Club Ladies Pro-Am. Over the new Exeter layout he produced a fine four under par 65 which included six birdies.

His 65 gave him a two shot winning margin over China Fleet’s James Ruth (67) with Nick Horrocks (Staddon Heights) and Duncan Arnold (Warren) third, both scoring level par 69’s.
