AS always, a strong field competed last Monday (February 22) in Downes Crediton Golf Club’s Senior’s competition, a pairs medalford, which saw top spot go to the duo of Colin Wheatcroft and John Warren.

Their score of 14, three under par, tied the pairing of Gerry Hodder and Alan Willey but a superior back nine saw them take the spoils.

Taking third spot, also with a better back nine, over a group tied on 15, two under par, were Graham Cox and Mike Hammond.

Thursday (February 25) saw no club competition for Downes ladies but two teams of six members did travel to Saunton to compete in the Saunton Ladies Challenge.

The “A” team finished in a very impressive third place behind teams from Burnham and Berrow that took first and second spots.

Saturday, February 27 saw Downes members compete in a three player Team Medalford. This format that sees teams play medal on the front nine and Stableford on the back was won by father and daughter, Jon and Katie Cornish, alongside John Smale with a sparkling 14 under par score of three.

This gave them a three shot victory over runners-up Robert Dobson, Peter Russell and Jim Dunlop who posted an 11 under par total of five.

Following on in third, beating two other teams with a better back nine, were Chris Wall, Robbie Hallam and Chris Porter scoring six.
