NEWTOWN Football Club held their inaugural Charity Golf Day at Downes Golf Club on Friday, August 1.
Seventeen four balls, made up of past and current Newtown players, topped up by family and friends, pitted their golfing abilities against the challenges of Downes.
The day was a charity event to raise funds for the Football club, and for the Meningitis Research Foundation.
This is a charity that the club has been raising funds for since 2005, when very sadly they lost one of their own to this horrible disease disease, aged just 18.
The overall winners, with a massive 105 points, were past players Mark Taylor, Morris Curtis, Rob Curtis and Jamie Harris.
Newtown would like to thank all at Downes Crediton for their help in the day making it such a success. They look forward to returning in 2026.

Last week’s article ended with a congratulatory note for the Club Palairet team, and the promise of more news this week.
On Sunday, July 27 the Downes team were at East Devon playing the Churston GC Palairet side.
The enthusiastic follow up report on the Downes social media page read as follows: “The Lionesses may have retained their Euros crown on Sunday and grabbed all the media attention, but it's worth recognising the DCGC Palairet Team is quietly going about their business with a great win by 3½ to 1½ in the quarter-finals against Churston at East Devon yesterday. Special mention to Matt Slee and Matt Russell, extending their unbeaten run with a 4&3 victory.”
With the win against Churston under their belts, the Club Palairet Team now move to the Semi-final and Final matches.
These are played on the same day at Stover Golf Club on Sunday, August 10. It’s a testing day, as both the Semi-final winners then go on to play the Final, immediately following the conclusion of these two matches.
The club wishes our team a memorable day, hopefully with the best of outcomes. No doubt a number of members and followers will be there to give their encouragement and support.
The Club was excited to announce that we have a new Junior organiser.

Nigel Hoskins started his role by introducing himself at a meet and greet session on Sunday, followed by a Junior competition.
Nigel is keen for any juniors wanting to try their hand at golf to come along on a Sunday and join in the coaching sessions.
Parents are very welcome to attend to ask any questions they may have. The club has equipment that beginners can use should it be needed.
Results this week include the Seniors Joe Liversage 4BBB Trophy on Monday, won by the team of William O’Leary and Nigel Hoskins with a 50 points.
The Ladies July Medal was won by Angela Storey on 74, pipping Ying Wong on the same total with a better back nine.
The Thursday 9 hole Stableford was won by John Dowling with 23points.
On Saturday a large field of players, exactly 100 golfers, took part in the 21st Century Flag competition.
This was a medal format and was won by Neil Chard with a score of 66. In second place, also with a score of 66 was Gerald Abdoll, and in third place on 67, was Jamie McGuigan.
