MONDAY, August 22 saw Downes Crediton Golf Club Seniors do battle for the Mike Dunk and Phil Ollis Trophies.

Posting the best score of the day was Martin Rutley with an impressive 42 points which also gave him victory in Division One and the Phil Ollis Trophy.

In second place was Dennis Wright whose 39 points beat a group of players with a better back nine holes.

Bob Rippon won Division Two and the Mike Dunk Trophy with his 39 points beating Roger Gratton (39 points) with a superior back nine. Paul Dorothy finished third, a point further back with 38 points.

Jason Arnold took top spot in the Midweek Stableford on Wednesday, August 24 with a fine 41 points. Paul Edworthy finished second, scoring 38 points with Steven Knight third with 37 points.

The Ladies played an Invitation Canadian Greensomes Stableford on Thursday, August 25, which saw some great scoring.

Downes’ member Trish Wallis teamed up with Pam Clarke from Ashford Manor to score a massive 46 points.

Five points further back were Judith Ezard and Okehampton member Penny Deakin whose 41 points ensured them second spot.

Third place went to Sue Jackson of Downes and partner Sylvie Coache-Tucker scoring 40 points.

Saturday, August 27 saw Downes members and guests from Bigbury and The Warren play in the ever-popular John Veale Charity Challenge raising money for the Captains Charity, The Devon Freewheelers.

With lots of prizes up for grabs the leading Team victory went to the Downes quartet of Ali Sawyer, Lee Perrot, John Dean and Ryan Cross with a very impressive 22 under par 94 points.

Following on two shots further back were Steve Lay, Brian Vicary, Rick Eidam and Simon Cartlidge, whose 92 points beat Gary Sharp, Gerry Tomlinson, Jim Dunlop and Ray Kelly into third place courtesy of a better back nine holes.

In the individual three players posted 40 points with Ian Steer in top spot followed by Tom Berry in second and Ryan Cross third.

At the presentation that followed all competitors were thanked for their support of the event whilst John Veale was congratulated on another great event and on the £1,800 raised up until that point during the day.

A fine 5-0 victory over Bovey Castle in their latest Dartmoor League match, played on Sunday, August 28, ensured Downes Crediton still top the league with just a couple of matches to play.
