LAST week we mentioned that the Saturday competition was played in some rather unusual conditions for this summer - rain!

Indeed over the recent 10 days or so there has been a fairly reasonable amount of precipitation.

The obvious outcome, when looking at the golf course over those days, has been quite dramatic.

Gone are the straw like colours of the ground, and these have been replaced by a very welcome bright green.

Grass has quite extraordinary powers of recovery and, while patchy in some places, the course is looking so much more like its old self.

The Green keepers are smiling, and their mowing equipment is working overtime. It is heartening to see the stripes appearing again on the fairways and greens.

On Saturday, September 5, it was the Pro’s Day Open. In fact there was a competition for all adults, and also a competition for Juniors.

The event was very well attended with 115 competitors taking part.

As well as the main 18 hole competition, there were a number of challenges on the course.

There were the usual favourites, such as nearest the pin on all the par 3’s, and the ever popular nearest the gin on the 6th hole.

In addition to these prizes, was the longest drive.

Another favourite on the Pro’s Day is the “Beat the pro” competition. This took place on the 15th hole.

This is a challenging par 3 hole, approximately 150 yards, with the last 60 yards over water.

The task was simple, could players get closer to the pin on the 15th than our very own Ollie Greenslade?

It was an enjoyable and very well supported day, which was a lot of fun and in addition was a way of thanking our two valued Golf Professionals, Ollie Greenlade and Joe Jordan.
