CREDITON hosted Galmpton on Tuesday evening (September 20) knowing a win would put them back to the summit. Crediton lined up 4-3-3 with a strong side on the pitch.
The game was fiery from the start with both teams putting in fierce tackles and sometimes dangerous actions. The hosts had all of the clear chances in the opening half-hour but only had a Stone volley cannoned back off the cross bar and a Durrant chip cleared off the line to show for it.
Both sides received yellow cards but the score-line remained 0-0 at the break.
The deadlock was broken on 50 minutes. An inswinging Bilcock corner was powered home by the shiny bald head of Lee Riggs. Against the run of play Galmpton equalised on 54 minutes.
An excellent dipping strike from 25 yards deceived Tonkin in the home goal and went in off the far post to restore parity.
The hosts got what turned out to be the winning goal on 60 minutes. A superb surging run from Steven Norish saw him cut the ball back for Stone who cooly slotted home from 12 yards to put the yellows back in front.
The last half hour became increasingly tetchy with both teams committing fouls and breaking up play.
The visiting No 9 was arguing with the Creddy players, management, his own team mates and even himself at one stage!
The closest the visitors came to equalising was from a knock down at a corner but Tonkin was on-hand to smother the danger.
Creddy almost increased the lead but Ben Pike blazed over when well-placed at the death.
Another victory for the hosts which show they can now dig in and battle during a physical game.
Stoner showed some excellent touch and vision throughout the game to nab the star man award.
