DOWNES Crediton Golf Club Seniors competed in their August Medal, played from the white tees on Monday, August 8.
With nett 66, John Warren scored the best of the day to take the overall victory and also finish top in Division Two. Brian Johnston (nett 67) followed on in second place one shot adrift with Stan Gibson continuing his recent good form, scoring nett 71 to finish third.
James Downing took top spot in Division One posting a nett 67 with Mike Palmer second on nett 70 and Brian Willams third on nett 71.
Harold Martin stole the show in the Mid Week Stableford on Wednesday, August 10 racing through the first nine holes in a seven under par 25 points.
A back nine in a solid 16 points saw him post a 41 points haul to beat Neil Allport (38 points) and Rodin MacKay (38 points) into second and third respectively.
Thursday, August 11 saw Sue Jackson produce a superb nett 70 in the EWGA Medal 10 to take a huge eight shots victory over her nearest challenger Sue Bonner (nett 78). Sue Barr won the Bronze Two Division scoring a nett 80.
With the course in immaculate condition the August Medal, played on Saturday, August 13, saw tremendous scoring with 19 competitors beating par.
Winning overall with a superb seven under par nett 63 was the in-form Neil Wood beating Darren Russell (nett 63) into second place courtesy on a better back nine holes.
Wood’s score also saw him take victory in Division Two beating Alan Willey (nett 64) and Jack Cross (nett 64) by a single stroke.
Darren Russell won Division One with Robin Abrahams second scoring a nett 64 with Mike Nott third (nett 68).
Division Three victory went to Adrian Cram with a nett 66 who beat Paul Doran (nett 66) into second with a better back nine. Shaun Cross followed up in third with a nett 67.
In their 40th Anniversary year Downes Crediton hosted the prestigious Devon County Golf Union Palairet Finals Day on Sunday, August 14.
The Inter Club County Knock Out event saw Exeter Golf and Country Club beat Yelverton and Stover beat Teignmouth in the morning semi-finals and in the final Stover beat Exeter Golf and Country Club to be Champions.
At the presentation Devon County Golf Union President, Trevor Reynolds, thanked Downes Crediton Captain David Taylor for their help in hosting the event and the superb condition of the course and presented them with a plaque to mark the event.
In news away from the club, Club Captain, David Taylor, Lady Captain, Liz Mapson, along with Quin Payne-Cook and Fran Shrubsole had a fantastic result on Monday, August 8 when they travelled to Frilford Heath in Oxfordshire to represent Downes Crediton in the England Golf Club Team Finals.
They followed on from their regional final win to post a 14 under par 86 points and finished second in the National Finals just a single point behind winners Whitby Golf Club. Very well played to you all.
The following two days then saw Captain David Taylor put up a very good showing in the England Golf Captains’ Final at Frilford Heath finishing a creditable 19th out of the 60 qualifiers. Well played David.
