ON Sunday, April 24 Crediton United Football Club’s Under 12’s Girls team made the trip to the home of Yeovil Town where the very strong squad of nine girls played on the 3G pitch to play in a festival organised by Yeovil Ladies.

Crediton Coach, Sean Hartrey, explains: “Our opposition came from far and wide in our opening game against a side from Wales called Treowen Stars who had driven more than two hours to get there, so we knew they were going to be good!

“We did start slowly and didn’t really adapt to the surface and speed of opposition and the outcome was a defeat by two goals to nil.

“Our next opponents, Purnell Sports, were from Bristol and in a very close match, with a few chances in front of goal being spurned, we were edged out by one goal to nil but we were getting better and better as the game went on, a draw would have been a fair result.

“We then came to our final game against Martock Rovers, where we really found our form with a dominating performance and restricted opposition to very few chances and the only surprise was that we didn’t win by more with the final score of 1-0.

“The step up in quality of opposition shows we have a bit more to work to do but we are not far away from being a very good side!”

The girls were then invited to watch the Yeovil ladies in Women’s Super League Two action against Millwall Lionesses.

This for most of the girls was the first time they had seen Women’s Super League football and it was all about them seeing a top level side in action so they knew what they are striving for.

Sean said: “The match itself was incredibly high quality football and our coaches and girls were cheering them on with great gusto. After slipping a goal behind just before half-time Yeovil rallied and after hitting both posts and cross bar they finally got their equaliser with a fierce shout from Sarah Wiltshire.

“The game ended in a 1-1 draw and the announcement that the crowd was a record crowd of 831 for Yeovil Ladies at Huish Park.

“After the match all the Yeovil players came over and met all of our girls and signed autographs and there were many photo opportunities which was much appreciated. Our girls were all very excited and had now seen the role models for them to follow in their foot steps!

“The day had been a great success for all concerned and our thanks to Ellie and the team at Yeovil Ladies for putting on such a great day. We wish them every success for the remainder of the season. They have followed this game with two wins which has taken them to the summit of Women’s Super League Two, so keep going ladies.”

Any girls looking to play more football is invited to go along to any Friday evening training session at the sports fields behind Crediton United’s main pitch. They have their own tournament coming up and more details about that are available on the website: creditonyouthfc.co.uk .
