EXETER PANTHERS 7 - CREDITON U14S 1
ALWAYS a difficult fixture, and this game played on Saturday, January 25 was no exception.
Panthers are a driven team of skilled Performance Centre players (and what appeared to be a rogue 21 year-old with massive attitude to match!), ruthless in their desire to come away with three points...come what may.
Crediton, an inclusive club, entered the game with a defensive formation – coach Dave “Jose” Hughes saying “we need to ‘park the bus’,…as well as the train and crane!”
Crediton played down hill in the first half and started the game with dogged determination.
The Crediton attackers created opportunities with a shot and testing the ‘keeper in the first seven minutes; an attacking flurry visibly rattling the Panthers.
Sadly, this fed their desire resulting in them scoring 10 minutes into the game.
Reece went on to make a fine save with his leg and the whole team showed they were not going to be put off by their opposition.
Crediton were playing well with Kieren reading their attack and Pete definitely letting the opposition know he was there!
Panthers fought back, upping their game a few gears, after being under pressure. This resulted in them doubling their lead. An outstanding save from Reece kept the score 2-0 at half-time.
Jon “Hammers” Harris took the team talk and was encouraging and positive. It was a good first half performance by Crediton.
Panthers came back from half-time fighting and had two early chances from corners, well defended by Crediton.
Matt and Joe controlled the defence with Tyler putting in a big shift for a little man!
Eight minutes into the second half, Crediton countered with Knoxy breaking through, cutting back onto his left foot, leaving the ‘keeper in no-mans-land. A great goal, making it 2-1.
Panthers upped their game and ruthless attitude and took the opportunity of playing down the hill. They went on to score a few more.
Final score 7-1.
Great battling was shown by Gabe. As well as running the line, Jon “Hammers” Harris, found himself getting grief from opposition players and supporters.
Crediton put on a brave fight and every player showed a real strength of character and an amazing team spirit. They demonstrated good sportsmanship which was sadly lacking by their opponents.
They literally laughed in the face of adversity and left the pitch smiling. The post match team photograph reflects their mood – beaten but definitely not defeated.
Crediton were definitely the “better team”.
