CREDITON Youth FC U9 Girls took part in the Saints South West tournament on Sunday, May 29 at Ashbury Golf Club near Okehampton.

Due to other teams being short of players the tournament ended up being a five-a-side event.

Each side played six qualifying games to decide which teams would compete for the cup or for the plate competition.

The girls all played really well and won three games, drew one and had two defeats by the odd goal. The Crediton girls only just missed out on qualifying for the cup competition, so ended up in the plate final.

It was a really nervous game with Crediton having lots of possession, but their opponents Saints Southwest defended really well and were probably having the better of the chances in the game.

However, as the game progressed it was Crediton who managed to take the lead with a superb goal from Merryn. The Saints never gave up but the Creddy girls managed to keep them at bay and the game finished 1-0 to Crediton.

It was a lovely sunny day and everyone was very proud of the Crediton girls performance. This was their first ever trophy.

Hopefully, this is first of many more to come for this great group of girls, and their supportive parents, who are still in their first season.

Other weekend results saw the U10’s take on Culm Sampford at Lords Meadow. They raced into a 3-0 lead with two goals from Daniel Southall and another from Freddie Peake.  They then took their foot off the gas, and let the visitors back into the game at 3-3.

Those watching were not too sure if it was the hot weather, or if the boys had used up too much energy singing “Happy Birthday” to hard working club treasurer Sabrena Philp before the game started.

However, Casey Philp wrapped things up with an absolute screamer, to give the home side a 4-3 victory and to give his mum an extra special birthday present.

Both the U8’s and U9’s entered sides in the Dawlish Youth tournament at the weekend. It was a mixed bag of results for both age groups. The U8’s gave their player of the day to Hugh Swain.
