Peninsula League Division One East

CREDITON 4 - BRIXHAM 5

WHERE do we start with this report? Crediton United had the three points wrapped up but then gave Brixham a very early Christmas present with the match finishing in total fog darkness.

Creddy lined up in a 4-3-3 formation for the game on Tuesday, October 25, and raced out of the blocks in what looked like a precession would follow.

Simon Durrant opened the scoring on 13 minutes and Kieran Stone doubled the lead on 15 minutes with a low finish. Brixham pulled one back on 22 minutes when, after a long clearance split the home defence, the lively No 8 curled home a beauty from 20 yards.

In a game littered with chances and goals looking inevitable during every attack the hosts stretched the lead on 41 minutes.

After a corner was recycled the ball fell to Perry Carpenter on the edge of the box and his driven shot took a monumental deflection and nestled in the far corner to take the score to 3-1 at the break.

The game looked like it was wrapped up on 47 minutes, the Brixham centre-half woefully underhitting a back pass and Durrant was on-hand to slide home a neat finish for his second goal of the game.

Riggs was then substituted for Groom at the heart of the defence and this is where the game somehow changed for the worst for Creddy.

A driven shot was split by Tonkin in the home goal and the rebound was tucked home for 4-2.

On 64 minutes a long through ball from the centre-half again caught Creddy out and gave the No 8 another one-on-one situation which he gleefully slotted home for 4-3.

Unbelievably Brixham were level on 66 minutes, another attack led to a two-on-one situation and the striker cut the ball back for his striker partner to tuck home to level the score at 4-4.

Gregory and Khoo were both introduced off the bench to try and stem the tide but again it was Brixham who scored but in hugely controversial circumstances.

A through ball from the half-line sent through two strikers who were both in offside positions and despite the linesman’s flag being raised the referee waved to play on and the No 8 was again one-on-one with the hopelessly exposed Tonkin. The striker cooly slotted home to complete his hat-trick and an unbelievable turn around.

The game finished in near darkness with fog descending upon Lords Meadow and when the final whistle blew, it brought an end to Crediton’s unbeaten home start to the season.

This game showed Crediton’s poor defensive display for the first time this season, simple through balls not being dealt with and a second half capitulation which can hopefully be out down to a one game blip.

Next up for Creddy is a home game against Newton Abbot Spurs on Saturday (October 29) looking to get back to winning ways. Up the Creddy!
