WINKLEIGH 3 - HEAVITREE SECONDS 2

WINKLEIGH FC travelled to Exeter on Saturday, September 19 in their opening game of the new league system, which saw them play Heavitree Seconds.

Winkleigh never got going and limped through the first half, struggling to create any real cut chances.

Winkleigh’s best opportunity came on the 10th minute when a header from midfielder Tom Robinson was tipped excellently over the bar to keep the score at 0-0.

After that Heavitree was the team answering all the questions when a well-worked counterattack was rounded off neatly when the striker slashed a shot across the box to make it 1-0.

Winkleigh, who came into the game in good form, was not able to respond and it was the home team that made it 2-0 on the 30-minute mark.

A cross field pass was touched and powered home at the near post. Goalkeeper Steve Johns would no doubt have thought he could have done better.

The old cliche of a game of two halves was never more present in this case with Winkleigh coming out after half-time a different team.

They continuously attacked for 45 minutes.

Winkleigh talisman came on in the second half giving Winkleigh more of an outlet but it was the right winger who started the comeback with a delicate chip over the outstretched ‘keeper to make it 2-1.

Winkleigh made it 2-2 with 10 minutes to go with a tap in for Robin Knight from a ‘keeper’s parry.

The comeback was complete in the last kick of the game when Robin Knight struck from 20 yards that neatly tucked into the bottom corner.

Lots to learn from the game for both sides but Winkleigh can be encouraged with a never die attitude.
