THE Annual Sandford Cricket Club Sponsors’ Lunch was held at the Creedy Park pavilion on Sunday, September 1. More than 40 sponsors and committee enjoyed a two course meal prepared by the effervescent Nicky Radnor, and many thanks go to her for the excellent meal provided, ably assisted by Debbie Sparham.

Phil Matten oversaw proceedings but Club Chairman Mike Discombe made a rare speech thanking everyone for their financial support and hoped it would continue in the future. He gave a brief resume of what had happened at the Club during the season, and acknowledged what a good season it had been, especially with the First Eleven maintaining their position in the Devon Premier League, and the Seconds having gained promotion to C Division East, where next season they will play local rivals Shobrooke Park.

Mike also advised everyone that 2020 would see a Third Eleven starting up, and who will play in the lowest Division of the Devon League on Saturdays. They will be playing their home games at Newton St Cyres.

Unfortunately the demise of Sunday cricket had led to this decision, and hence the Club would be pulling one of its Sunday teams out of the North Devon League at the end of this season.

Mike also went on to acknowledge the importance of the Youth section at the Club, with nine teams in various age groups for boys and girls representing the Club throughout the season.

One of the reasons for the Third Eleven being set up was owing to the number of over 13’s, who it is thought, should be capable of stepping up to play Senior’s cricket at the level at which they will be playing in the Devon League.

Without the continuing support of our loyal sponsors all of this would not be possible, and this point was specifically made.

Paul Smith then provided some additional information, together with various “stats”, which included advising everyone that more than 60 children had signed up for the ECB All Stars coaching this year (five-eight year olds) and that a further 160 had registered for the older groups coaching (nine-19). An amazing set of figures for a “village” Club.

First Eleven captain Richard Foan also thanked everyone for their support, and gave a brief insight into his vision for the future for the Club. He also made the point that he felt that the sponsors pay a big part in any success achieved by the Club, both on and off the field of play.

Phil Matten then summed up a few other issues and wished everyone an enjoyable afternoon which also included tea, again provided by Nicky and Debbie. A good day was had by all, especially three of the committee members!
