SANDFORD First X1 defeated Cornwood by five wickets to shoot past Paignton and into second place in the Premier Division table.

Cornwood recovered from a nervy 37 for four to make 182 all out in the last of their 50 overs.

Skipper Jackson Thompson (47) and former captain Matt Skeemer (50) put on 77 for the fifth wicket to repair the early damage done by Trevor Anning (2-10), Harrison Jones and Jamie Palmer.

Cornwood went into a second decline after Thompson departed to opposite number Richard Foan (3-23) as 114 for five deteriorated to 136 for eight. Josh King picked-up a couple of wickets.

Ninth pair George Thompson (17) and James Richardson (21) cobbled together a stand of 36 that helped the Corns put something potentially defendable on the board.

Skeemer had Sandford rocking at the start with all three wickets as they dipped to 31 for three. That was as good as it got for Cornwood.

Foan (55) and Zimbabwean Johnathan Campbell (85 not out) put on 130 for the fourth wicket that ended the game as a contest.

Anning (12 not out) was in at the end when the winning runs were scored in the 37th over.

Winning skipper Foan said Sandford showed an appetite for work that has not always been obvious. “We had to work hard for the win, which is something in the past we have not been very good at,” said Foan.

The Second and Third XIs both played teams who top their leagues and ended up with defeats.

The Second XI fielded very well but the total of 225 for nine by Clyst St George always seemed a tall order.

There were two wickets apiece for Archie Osborne, Shaun Hawkins and Liam Gardner and it was good to see the fielding intensity kept up for the full 45 overs.

The Sandford reply got off to a great start with Tom Gidney, 34, and Chris Blake, 26, getting ahead of the run rate but once wickets started to fall there was no one able to keep the momentum going.

Aiming to get eight bonus points became the target and this was achieved with the help of 38 extras as Sandford finished on 181 for nine thus losing by 44 runs.

The Third XI fared no better at Newton Tracey as the home side dismissed Sandford for 107 and strolled home by eight wickets!

Ellie Bishop top scored with 22 with Simon Saunders scoring 19 and Alex Stevens scoring 18.

It was one wicket apiece for Ellie and Jemima Vereker.

Sunday proved to be a great day for the two ladies. Sandford ladies scored 268 for two against Topsham St James.

Ellie and Jemima shared an opening stand of 180 with Jemima scoring 95 and Ellie finishing undefeated on 97 not out.

The visitors were then bowled out for 39 with Emily Wilson and Clare Heywood each picking up three wickets.

This year’s run in the County 20/20 competition ended with a seven wicket defeat at the hands of Bradninch.

Skipper Richard Foan top scored with 55, but the next best was Ryan Glass with 22, and a score of 139 all out was never going to be challenging.
