FOLLOWING the first round of games in the Sandford Cricket Club Community League competition, the Rugby Club and Three little Pigs each posted victories in their opening matches.
With the same six teams competing for honours again this year, Graphic will be looking to be the first team to retain the Barrie Sparham OBE Memorial Trophy they won last year.
They had remarkably become the seventh winner of the competition in the seven years the Community League has been in existence.
However, their first game against Crediton Inn was called off due to adverse weather conditions, so both teams shared the points.
Crediton Rugby Club started their season off with a comfortable victory against Sandford Parents and Colts, and Three Little Pigs proved to be worthy winners against a much-weakened Sandford Football Club team, with both teams providing good entertainment for the large watching crowd.
The Pigs and Football Club may not, by their own admission, be the best teams in the competition, but what they lack in ability, they make up for in entertainment value.
By the time this article is read a couple more games will have been played, Crediton Inn and the Parents playing on Tuesday (June 4), and Graphic and Football Club playing on Wednesday (June 5).
Fixtures for June: Wednesday, June 12 Three Little Pigs v Graphic; Tuesday, June 18 Football Club v Rugby Club; Wednesday, June 19 Crediton Inn v Three Little Pigs and Wednesday, June 26 Rugby Club v Graphic.
LADIES CRICKET
At the Hatherleigh eight-a-side tournament played on Bank Holiday Monday, May 27 Sandford Ladies played five, won three, lost one and tied one.
Tied on points with Cornwood, Sandford scored more runs and lost less wickets over the day so emerged overall winners.
Leading run scorer for Sandford was Jemima Vereker 29*, 27*, 16 and 27*.
Following the games Sue Tidball presented Sandford skipper Lottie Miles with the cup.
ELLIE
Congratulations also go to Ellie Bishop who scored an unbeaten 102 for Devon Under 15’s against Oxfordshire on Friday, May 31.
Results for last weekend (report to follow in next week’s issue): First Eleven lost to Bovey Tracey by 77 runs; Second Eleven lost to Clyst St George by 178 runs and the Sunday Eleven forfeited match to Westleigh as unable to raise a side.
Fixture at Creedy Park tomorrow, Saturday, June 8, at 12.30pm First Eleven v Plymouth.
