CREDITON Racketball is in its second season playing in the Devon League, where there are two divisions.

The Crediton Club started in League Two last season and members achieved great success in games, winning them at a canter, despite several players having never played racketball before, just squash.

Ashley Knight, county player and club captain, explained: "When we started we even persuaded our 84-year-old president Perry Warren to play for us to help out.

"During the last season our growing club has attracted more players and now we are in our second season at the top of the league with one game left.

"Just 12 points guarantees Crediton its first major title."

Ashley said he was hoping for a league and cup double in the club’s next game at the Devon and Exeter Squash Club.

He continued: "Even better, if we achieve all this, with ever present local lad Bradley Taylor who as yet has never lost a match in the club’s two-year racketball history.

"We also have young blood in Josh Smart and Ben Hancock, both future Devon players.

"Veteran Paul Gregory has played a vital part picking up some important wins this season.

"Another local boy Pete Harvey has helped out along with Professional Sports Association (PSA) player Sam Ellis.

"We have recently acquired the services of Steve Selley who jumped ship to find a new challenge from the Devon and Exeter Squash Club and what a signing he has proved to be."

All the player’s at the Crediton Club are encouraged by Ashley.

On Thursday, February 15, the Crediton Club hosted a match at Lords Meadow Leisure Centre versus the Exeter Golf and Country Club team.

Sam Ellis beat Mike Gregory in a gruelling hour long match to win 3-1, Sam weathering the early storm to run down the Golf Club number one.

Ashley Knight comfortably won, as did Josh Smart.

There were tougher matches for Brad Taylor and Steve Selley but both came through to win 3-1.

Despite the tough tight matches the club turned over yet another big club 5-0 to win.

Ashley said that the final match against second placed Devon and Exeter Two could see Crediton winning the championship.
