KIRTON overcame Plymouth Marjon to reach the fourth round of the Devon Premier Cup, in a special game as part of the FA's "Football Remembers" weekend.
Both sides mingled for the pre-match photograph - in order to mark the Christmas Truce during World War One a century ago - when troops from England, Scotland, France and Germany held an impromptu halt from battle to exchange gifts and engage in games of football.
Thousands of teams across the country took part in the commemoration and uploaded their images online – from internationals through to the Football League, non-league and even local school teams.
Lloyd Copp netted the sole goal of the tie following an error from away keeper Liam Hooks, as United dominated the first half at Lords Meadow. Other chances fell to the likes of Perry Carpenter up front, but were struck over the bar.
Although the visitors from the Plymouth and West Devon Combination League (PWDCL) gave their all and created opportunities after the break, it was the South West Penisula Football League (SWPL) hosts who portrayed their superiority and held on to secure safe passage past the lower division Students.
The Marjons – whose university has always been renowned for its sporting pedigree – created several openings including Liam Donavan firing just wide.
But late on the Mid Devoners were handed a man-advantage following the dismissal of the Plymouth team's Danny Allen for a dangerous foul.
