IN May and June 2026, to mark her 60th birthday, a local woman will be walking the entire South West Coast Path — around 630 miles over 60 days. It’s one of the UK’s toughest long‑distance routes, involving rugged coastal terrain, relentless climbs, and more than 35,000 metres of ascent.
It’s often described as the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest four times, and it will test her physical and mental resilience every single day.
But she is doing it for a reason far greater than the miles.
Four years ago, Corinne Waterford’s stepson, Wellington Cumberland, took his own life at the age of 42.

Corinne explained: “He was deeply loved, and his loss changed our lives forever.
“In his memory, I am taking on this challenge to raise funds for CALM, a charity dedicated to preventing suicide and supporting people who are struggling with their mental health.
“CALM provides free, confidential and anonymous support through a national helpline and webchat service, as well as practical tools, advice, and national campaigns that challenge stigma and remind people they are not alone. Their work saves lives by offering compassion, connection, and hope at critical moments.
“Every step I take represents someone who has struggled, someone who has been lost, and someone who still needs help today. My JustGiving page, which shares more about the challenge and why I’m doing it, can be found here: https://www.justgiving.com/page/walkingwithpurpose .”
Corinne began her fitness journey at Active Mid Devon at Lords Meadow in Crediton just before Christmas, following a fitness programme designed by instructors Laura and Rachel.
Enjoying a wide variety of classes, Corinne has been building both physical strength and mental resilience to prepare for the challenge ahead, for which Corinne said she is very grateful.
Sponsorship support would be appreciated.
