ON a bright, sunny spring morning in Minehead, Mid Devon resident Corinne Waterfield began her 630‑mile walk along the South West Coast Path in support of CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably).
She set off at 10am on Thursday, April 30, joined by two close friends, Jane Welsh and Tracey Lindley, who walked the opening miles with her.
The atmosphere was warm, hopeful, and full of purpose as the trio stepped onto the trail beneath clear skies and soft coastal light.
For Corinne, who turned 60 in February, this challenge marks a powerful way to honour her 60th year.
Corinne is undertaking the two‑month journey in memory of her stepson, Wellington (“Welly”) Cumberland, who died by suicide four years ago at the age of 42.
His loss has shaped her commitment to raising awareness, encouraging open conversations, and supporting the work CALM does to prevent suicide and provide life‑saving support.
Speaking before she set off, Corinne said: “Starting this walk today, in the sunshine and with Jane and Tracey beside me, felt incredibly grounding. I’m walking for Welly, for everyone we’ve lost, and for everyone who still needs help. This is my 60th year, and I wanted to do something that truly matters.”
The South West Coast Path is one of the UK’s most demanding long‑distance routes, with rugged terrain and more than 35,000 metres of ascent — the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest four times.
Corinne will complete the full 630 miles over 60 days, sharing daily updates, reflections, and photographs as she progresses.
She undertook at programme of fitness during the months before her walk at Lords Meadow Leisure Centre in Crediton.
