AT the beginning of the Crediton Bowling Club season a fixture card is produced which helps club members know the dates of both league and friendly fixtures, and of any pre-arranged internal events.

This, however, is just the tip of the iceberg in regard to playing commitments.

In addition to these fixtures individuals and groups enter competitions to be played against other bowlers in Devon.

Some of these just stay local but there are also competitions entered that could lead to finals being played towards the end of the summer at Leamington Spa.

The life of some bowlers at this early part of the season can therefore become very hectic and one can quite often hear comments in the clubhouse such as “my next free day without a match is not for 10 days”!

I will continue to give details of fixtures that appear in the fixture card for those that are interested to know who might be playing and when, but rest assured there can very often be additional matches being played that have been organised for these County and National competitions.

The victorious Crediton A Over 60’s Exeter Division One Champions of 2022 will be played their first home game of the season, on Wednesday, May 10.

The team started their 2023 campaign with exactly the same result as they had in 2022, by defeating Uffculme away 6-2.

They followed this up at home by “thumping” Seaton A 8-0.

The Over 60’s B team had a good 6-2 victory over Madeira C but unfortunately the C team fixture at Tiverton West End fell foul to the weather and will have to be replayed later in the season.

The ladies had a mixed week as the Crediton Yellow team travelled to Seaton, but were beaten 4-2, whereas the Crediton Green team overcame Uffculme by the same score.

There was an excellent 4-1 win for Crediton over Topsham in the Top Club and in the Thursday evening EDL league the A team beat Pinces 8-0, the B team drew 4-4 with Exonia A and the C team defeated Belmont A 6 - 2. The week ended with a friendly fixture against South Molton which Crediton won 4-2 on rinks, but lost by four shots overall.

Nicky Payne and Helen Ellis had an excellent win in the opening round of the National Pairs Four woods and Joe Miles, Shuana Miles and Maggie Chaplin defeated their opponents from Okehampton in the opening round of the Burma Star Triples.
