BACK in the late 1970’s when Rodney Butler was manager of Midland Bank in Crediton, the local firm of A White and Sons was commissioned to carry out the refurbishment of the branch.

This led on to the challenge of a bowls match between the two companies and White’s produced a trophy called “The Bowls Brick”.

The match was played annually at Crediton Bowling Club however it hasn’t been played in recent years with Midland/HSBC being the holders of the trophy.

On Saturday, August 11, staff, past and present, from HSBC and a team from A White and Sons, which included three generations of the White family, joined together to enjoy a “friendly” game of bowls.

At the end of the 15 ends the score was a draw, so two more ends were played and White’s won the match by one shot. Everyone present said that they had enjoyed the game and that they looked forward to resuming the match again next summer.

Crediton Bowling Club Ladies Captain, Marilyn Carpenter then presented “The Bowls Brick” to David and Andrew White who said: “We will treasure the brick”.

A total of £95 was raised for Prostate Cancer which is the charity chosen by Mark Theedom, Crediton Bowling Club’s President.
