ACTIVE Mid Devon has confirmed its leisure discounts for unpaid carers are now permanent, following approval at the district council’s cabinet meeting on April 7.

The decision builds on the success of a 12‑month pilot scheme designed to improve access to leisure facilities for unpaid carers across Mid Devon and the wider Devon area.

Feedback from carers and partner organisations showed strong demand for the scheme and demonstrated the positive impact that affordable, flexible leisure opportunities can have on physical health, mental wellbeing and social connection.

Under the permanent scheme, unpaid carers will continue to benefit from: free access under the age of 18; a 25 per cent discount on membership aged 18 and over; a 20 per cent discount on casual sessions; and no peak-time restrictions at Active Mid Devon centres.

The offer is available to eligible individuals, including those holding a Carers Passport, young carers with a Young Carers ID Card issued by the Devon Carers Young Carers service, and parent carers of children who hold a Max Card from Devon County Council.

Councillor Josh Wright (Lib Dem, Silverton) said: “Swimming and gym sessions have been especially popular with carers, offering valuable time to focus on their own wellbeing, while our leisure centres also provide welcoming social spaces, including café areas, where carers can relax, connect with others and feel supported.

“We’re really looking forward to welcoming carers across Mid Devon and helping them enjoy everything our centres have to offer.”

Philip and Linda Cornish, Mid Devon Carer Ambassadors for Devon Carers, added: “We are very thankful to Mid Devon District Council for fully supporting the reduction of costs for unpaid carers at Active Mid Devon. We are sure this will help carers with their health and well-being in their caring role.”
