THE days may be getting shorter but the action continues at Crediton Tennis Club, which plays on the outdoor courts at Lords Meadow Leisure Centre on Sunday mornings from 10am and and is always happy to welcome new members.
The Club has a team in the East Devon Mixed League which has played three matches, including a good win against a team from Woodbury. Unfortunately two other matches have been rained off but will be played in the new year.
For the first time for some years the Club has entered a Mens Team, which plays in Division Three of the Exeter and District League.
The Men’s Doubles captain is Richard Wilk, guided and assisted by Robin Denny.
The opening fixture was probably the hardest one this season, playing a very strong Seaton team. The result was 0-8!
The next fixture was away at Lympstone. Robin and Simon McKinnel managed two points, matched by Connor Champ and Richard. One championship tie break, won by Lympstone, tipped the fixture in their favour, 4-5.
The first home game, played indoors on carpet at The Manor Hotel, Fowley, against Exeter Golf and Country Club “C” team, saw Connor, partnered by Gerry Bowden-Thomson, gain a maximum four points.
Richard and Simon won a vital set to gain a 5-4 victory.
The most recent fixture, again at The Manor, saw Connor and Gerry repeat their four point haul, losing one set in the process.
Their powerful play is combined at times with patient and astute defence. Robin was partnered by Brian Sim and they critically gained a set 7-6 on a tie break. A 5-5 draw was the outcome.
Currently four matches have been played with two defeats, one draw and an all-important win. There are six games to go with the aim to finish mid-table or higher!
