A STUNNING idyllic autumnal morning greeted some 139 cyclists to the picturesque setting of Creedy Park, the home of Sandford Cricket Club, for the Sandford Slammer cycle event on Sunday, October 10.

The weather was still, hardly a breath of wind and the sun was rising, perfect conditions awaited those riding in this year’s event, the fifth time The Slammer has taken place.?Each rider had a choice of two routes, 58 or 34 miles. Both presented their own challenges with some serious climbs to overcome yet off they set at 9am to take on the challenge, 22 riding the 34 miles, the remainder the 58.

Awaiting each participant at the half-way point was the most amazing food stop, the stop was described by many as the best they’ve had, each cake – of almost every variety - baked and donated by many of the unsung volunteers who support The Slammer.

Chris O’Connor, one of the organisers, explained: “This year’s event has raised a grand total of £2,430 (entries received £2,085, pasty sales £98 and personal donations of £247).

“We are particularly grateful for the donations of £247, the generosity of the public and those taking part has been overwhelming.

“This year’s proceeds will be split equally between three worthy recipients, Devon Air Ambulance, Alzheimer’s Society and Sandford Relief in Need, each receiving £810.”?He said that once again, the organisers cannot thank the local cycling community enough for turning up and supporting The Slammer.

He continued: “As well as individual participants we also had riders from several local clubs. These included Willand CC, BGE, Exeter Wheelers Cycling Club, Okehampton Cycling Club, Tiv Velos, Bad Lodgers CC, Cheriton Fitzpaine CC and of course the hosts, the Sandford Syclepaths.?“In addition, several local businesses and individuals have this year added their support to The Slammer. They are (in no particular order) Torello Cycle Services, Sandford Orchards, Rory Oliver (Photography), The Sandford Gate Milk Company, Meadowside Garage, Tesco, James Stagg Painting and Decorating Ltd, The BikeShed, the Withleigh Village Hall committee and Stevie Bs Bakery.”?The organisers also thanked Andrew Priddle, Mathew Theedom and all those involved with Sandford Cricket Club for accommodating and hosting The Slammer at Creedy Park.

Mr O’Connor said that he sincerely hoped it would prove to be a long-standing partnership.?Finally, Chris and Lyn said that they would like to thank each and every one of the volunteers.

They said: “No matter in what capacity each individual helped, the simple fact is that this ride would not happen without your fantastic support. Here’s looking forward to 2022!”
