OUR rural environment is Central Devon’s greatest asset, and our farmers deserve immense credit for their careful stewardship of the landscape we are all so proud to call home.

One of the highlights of my work is visiting farms across the constituency, and I am especially conscious of ensuring the voices of our farming community are heard loud and clear in Westminster.

Despite the many challenges facing the agricultural sector, I am consistently impressed with the ingenuity, resilience, and entrepreneurship I see from local farmers.

A recent visit to Shillingford Organics, just outside Exeter, was a fantastic example of this. It was a great pleasure to be shown around by Martyn Bragg and see first-hand the impressive operation he has built.

What struck me most about Shillingford Organics was its wonderful diversification. It operates not just as a farm but as a complete, sustainable ecosystem.

Many locals will be familiar with their excellent vegetable boxes, which bring healthy, seasonal, and locally grown organic produce directly to people's doorsteps.

This is a brilliant service that strengthens the connection between producer and consumer.

Beyond the veg boxes, Shillingford Organics also has a strong presence at local farmers' markets in Exeter, Crediton, and Topsham, as well as running its own farm shop and café.

This multi-faceted approach, which includes wholesale supply and on-farm events, demonstrates a forward-thinking business model that is deeply rooted in the local community.

It is this kind of innovation that ensures our rural economy remains vibrant.

Farms like Shillingford Organics are not just businesses; they are vital parts of our local fabric. They provide high-quality food, create jobs, and manage the countryside that we all cherish.

They are also educational hubs, helping people, especially children, understand where their food comes from and the importance of sustainable practices.

At a time when farmers are facing significant pressures, from unpredictable weather to economic uncertainty, it is more important than ever that we support them.

Initiatives that encourage people to shop locally and buy seasonal produce make a real difference, helping to sustain these essential enterprises for future generations.

My visit to Shillingford Organics reaffirmed my belief that our local farms are producing some of the finest food in the country, and I will continue to champion their interests and celebrate their invaluable contribution to life in Central Devon.
