IT was a real pleasure to enjoy a delicious pasty from Oliver’s in Crediton for lunch recently, made with wonderful fresh, local ingredients.

This independent family bakery, which has been serving the town for over a decade, is a fantastic example of what makes our local high streets so special.

High streets across the country have faced tough times, but here in Central Devon, I am always impressed by the energy, ingenuity, and resilience shown by our local businesses.

What sets our towns apart is how they adapt by building high streets rooted in community, offering quality experiences, and showing a genuinely inspiring spirit of entrepreneurship.

Crediton is a great example. A business like Oliver’s isn't just a place to buy bread and cakes; it’s part of the fabric of local life.

These businesses are catalysts for supporting local services, often run by individuals and families, and play an essential role in the economic and social life of our communities.

They create jobs, provide goods and services we need, and support our local neighbourhoods.

Food and hospitality are a real strength across Central Devon. When businesses thrive, they become hubs where customers come not just for good food, but for conversation and a sense of belonging.

I’ve seen this same spirit in places like Coco's café in Crediton, The Phoenix in Chudleigh, and Rafikis in Ashburton.

These establishments offer something fresh and full of personality, and they are underpinned by great customer service.

However, running a small business is never easy. Many are now facing serious challenges.

Rising costs for energy and supplies, combined with higher business rates and the recent increase in employer National Insurance, are squeezing already thin margins.

I have heard a consistent message from businesses across the constituency: these pressures make it harder to invest, grow, and take on new staff.

It is vital that we support our local enterprises. Our independent high street traders do so much to improve the quality of all our lives, and they need our support now more than ever.

They are the backbone of our thriving communities.

I will continue doing everything I can to champion them, and to ensure our towns and villages get the recognition and representation they deserve in Westminster. So please continue to support your local businesses.
