On Friday, November 20, Devon and Cornwall Police will be offering young people across the counties an op- portunity to take part in a “Takeover Day” as part of the national Children’s Commis- sioner “Takeover Day”.
The day will provide young people with an opportunity to learn about the work of Devon and Cornwall Police and to take part in activities that will allow them to influence decision making within the organisation.
Young people from Devon and Cornwall can see how the police work and those who want to help make some of the decisions the police have to make throughout the day are invited to get in touch.
The day will be held at police headquarters, Middle- moor in Exeter and those se- lected to take part will spend time with officers and staff learning about their roles, as well as take part in activities and tasks where you can influ- ence future projects.
Opportunities will be available with units through- out headquarters and young people will have the chance to spend time with the forensic units, dog handlers, chief of- ficers, professional standards and communications depart- ments.
Tony Hogg, Police and Crime Commissioner said: “Each year we welcome young people into our workplace for takeover day and each year we learn something new about their perspective of police. “We must do all we can to learn what young people think about their police, what they understand to be the police’s role in their communities and to help them understand how we need to shape policing in the future. I look forward to their visit very much.”
DCC Bill Skelly said: “See- ing things from a different perspective by getting a young person’s view on what we do and how we can do it better is a real benefit to us. We get a chance to really listen to what young people say and hear what they think.
“They also get a chance to shape how we work with young people in general. The day is always great fun and often a real eye opener for us and our new, young col- leagues.”
Last year Takeover Day attracted more than 44,000 children with 1,200 organisa- tions and individuals tak- ing part ranging from Tesco, “Blue Peter”, MPs and the Metropolitan Police.
If you would like to apply please complete an applica- tion form and return it no later than Wednesday, Sep- tember 30. Young people can ask someone else to help them with the form or to check it before it is sent, like a friend, parent, teacher or similar.
